Sunday Tuna trip

Last Sunday the 11th was an excellent day of Tuna fishing. The fish were about thirty miles off shore, the weather was great and the fish were biting. Several times every rod had fish on and the deck was awash with flopping Tuna. [We call that the Tuna boggy.] People were hooting, hollering and yelling. When all was said and done they ended up with fifty two Tuna. That worked out to about six and seven fish per person.

Back at the dock the excitement was still in full swing with the re enactment of the days catch being told over many times. Everyone had their fish filleted and vacuum packed. One group used our hand truck to haul their totes of vac packed fillets to their truck. That’s a good problem to have.

I’ve got to tell you. The people on this trip were a great bunch to be around and a pleasure to take fishing. I am looking forward to the next time they go with us.

Ocean Fishing Update

The summer ocean fishing season is up and running.

We had a tuna trip on the 7th with no fish landed. Yesterday the 9th, three boats in the same area averaged 38 tuna per boat. So, the Tuna are here. I filleted 25 of them. Nice grade of fish, average about 18lbs.

As stated on earlier posts the all depth Halibut was excellent and is closed for July and will open again in August. The inside 40 fathoms Halibut is open 7 days a week and the catch rate has been about 50%. It appears the fish are “there or not,” no in between.

Our Rockfish trips have been around 90% limits, with about 50% of the Lingcod being landed. The ocean crabbing on these trips is still lacking in numbers but should pick up soon.

The bay crabbing has picked up and is excellent with a few limits being landed. Some 60 plus trips.

The Salmon are not here in numbers and the catch is poor to put it mildly, but that can change at any time.

2010 Tuna Season off to a Great Start

We’ve been keeping our ear to the ground for any more news on the Tuna catch. Fishing has really kicked off and as of today Tuna have started hitting the docks. This is the best time to reserve a seat on a trip, the boats fill up fast. We’ll be posting pictures over the summer of the fish that we catch.

2010 Tuna Fishing Update

July 6th update: Tuna fishing is open!

We’ve been receiving a lot of inquires about the Oregon Tuna fishing season this year. Water temperatures are still a little cold for catching Tuna, but this could change very quickly…tomorrow…or even into the middle of July. Bottom line, Tuna will be running soon.

How Do We Know When to Start Fishing?

We can travel up to 100 miles off the coast to fish for Tuna. Tuna are caught in warmer water usually between 52 – 62 degrees F. We are actively monitoring Terrafin chart’s (example above) and when the temperature is right, it’s a good time to start fishing for Tuna. Very generally speaking the colder water is more conducive to larger fish in less density. When you start catching large Tuna you know that you are on the outside of larger schools in the warmer water.

Lots of Halibut and Rockfish

The Fishing has been great. We are still at 100% limits on the Halibut. I have been two times and came home with a 40 incher the first time and a 39 incher the second time. The biggest one I have filleted so far was a 60 pounder on the 18th. But the avarage is still about 25lbs.
We have been doing about 90% limits on the Rockfish and 50% limits on the Lingcod. I filleted a 15lb Cabazon today, it was caught by a 14 year old girl from Texas. We took some good pictures of her and her fish, we will get the picktures on the web soon.
The Chinook catching has been real bad, although they traditionally dont arrive in our area untill about July.
The Coho starts on the 26th of June and it looks like we will be fishing them until we reach our quota. Chinook Salmon will go all summer with no quota.
The Tuna season is getting closer all the time. We are already booking lots of trips for July and august.

limits on halibut trips

Halibut fishing is a repeat of the last 3 years. LIMITS on all of our trips so far this season, and boats in early.

The halibut have been a little smaller so far this year with a 20lb average. The largest fish I filleted was 36lbs.

We have 3 more days of all depth Halibut this month, and 3 days June 3rd-5th. If we haven’t reached our quota we will have more days coming.

Fish Tacos

Fish Tacos

1 pound of Halibut or Ling Cod fillets cut into one or two inch cubes

1 package McCormick Chicken Taco Seasoning Mix

4 10 inch corn tortillas

1 cup sour cream

¼ cup chopped cilantro

1 cup finely shredded cabbage

½ tomato, diced

3 green onions thinly sliced

½ avocado sliced

1 lime

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack

Mix ½ package of the Chicken Taco Seasoning Mix with the sour cream and the juice of 1/8 slice of lime. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. During this time prepare the vegetables and cheese.

Cover the bottom of a cast iron skillet with olive oil and heat to medium. Coat fish cubes with remaining Chicken Taco Seasoning Mix and fry until the fish is white throughout. Assemble tacos on heated tortillas and serve with slice of lime, Del Monte canned, sliced

mangos, and ½ ear of corn on the cob. (Serves two).

Spring Halibut and Salmon

Things are getting exciting around here as the anticipation of the Halibut and Salmon season are quickly catching up with us. The deckhands are in the back room putting new line on the polls and making sure everything is in good working order, the Coast Guard has completed all their inspections and signed off on the boats and we are ready to go.

I hope we have as good of a season with the Halibut as we have had the last 2 years where we limited all of our trips, [ 1 fish any size.] The first month of the Coho Salmon last year was 90% limits with a lot of throwbacks.

As for our bottom fishing trips, we have been limiting our boats on Rockfish and 50% of the lings are being caught.

I just talked to Jerald, the skipper of the Ocean Captain, and they just boated 4 nice Lings. The largest 25lbs. They have been fishing 2 hrs and have half of a limit of rockfish and Lings.
